We tentatively got Teamspeak3 working last night. I'll post more details later, and hopefully we'll have a perm channel on the server so it should be a bit easier.

We did look at alternatives to Skype some years ago, and the best free ones would have required one of us to set up a server and fiddle with the firewall. That's fine as long as it's always the same person hosting and they never skip a week. Hopefully by now there will be better solutions.

PostSubject: Why switch chat systems?   Skype, and possible replacements thereof EmptyFri Sep 19, 2014 10:41 am

While I have no objections to switching to another chat system, I'm still confused by objections to both the in-game voice, and to Skype. In-game works fine for me, as does Skype, both of which are free and require no cash to access, as some of the other options require.

Clearly, I'm missing the root of the problem that others must be experiencing.

Teamspeak appears to need a server.

Here is an older post of various alternatives:

And alternatives to Skype, of which there are several:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VoIP_software

Major ones are
http://www.teamspeak.com/
http://www.ventrilo.com/
http://www.mumble.com/

there's also
http://www.razerzone.com/comms
http://www.raidcall.com

I tried http://www.downloadc3.com/ , and thought it worked well - I liked the channel rather than call concept. I haven't tried the others, but I have a very strong dislike for skype on Win8.

I know last night someone mentioned mumble and teamspeak.

Also, here is the info on changing the windows settings so game sounds don't get lowered while skype is active:

The problem is actually within the Windows audio settings.

Try Below:
1. Click Start >> Run >> Type mmsys.cpl
2. Click the Communications tab.

There you can pick:
When windows detects incoming communications activity:

Mute all other sounds
Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%
Reduce the volume of other sounds by 50%
Do nothing
