At work we skipped 8. We've just starting building the odd PC or two with Windows 10 preview. You'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, so long as you do it within the first year of release. So it probably doesn't matter much which OS you go for.

Assuming Win10 isn't too horrible that is...

I believe it worked fine on 8.1, I don't generally play through steam. I just didn't like the 8.1 interface or some of the versions of apps on 8.1.

Sounds good. Might think of 16GB instead of 8GB RAM, but that can be cheaper to do yourself.
